Bergen Town Center has slowly turned into the food anchor of this town, Route 17 has a Mediterranean bakery cafe on the way, and a free Tuesday concert series most residents forget exists is running all August at the Bandshell. Here is the local map for the next few weeks, arranged by walking distance from your kitchen.
Bergen Town Center is now the food story
If you drove past 93 W Spring Valley Road in May and thought the corner looked busier than usual, you weren't imagining it. A popular bakery and café brand known for its pastries, brunch, and coffee has officially opened its newest New Jersey location in Bergen County. Tatte Bakery & Cafe is now open at Bergen Town Center in Maywood, located at 93 W Spring Valley Road. The Boston-born cafe had already planted flags in Ridgewood and Morristown before landing here, so the demand pattern is not a mystery. Expect a line on Saturdays and a workable weekday morning if you go before 9.
The menu leans into the reason you'd drive over instead of making coffee at home. The café is known for its housemade breads, pastries, breakfast dishes, brunch offerings, sandwiches, coffee drinks, desserts, and seasonal menu items. Guests can also expect rotating specialty drinks and gluten-free offerings as part of the menu. It's open seven days a week, which matters for the Saturday-brunch-then-errands crowd that treats Bergen Town Center as a one-stop.
The bigger picture at that shopping center is worth naming. The Jersey Shore-born fan favorite will open new locations at Ledgewood Commons by 2026 and Bergen Town Center in Paramus by Spring 2027, according to Urban Edge Properties. That's Tommy's Tavern & Tap, and while Spring 2027 is not tonight's problem, the sequence of tenants tells you where the center is heading. Tatte for morning. A casual sit-down tavern coming for weeknight dinners. If you've been treating that stretch as "the outlets," the mental model needs updating.
Route 17 is getting a Mediterranean corner
The next opening to watch is not at a mall at all. A new Mediterranean café and bakery concept is preparing to open in Paramus. Kabab Cafe will bring a mix of Middle Eastern and Mediterranean flavors to Route 17 with a menu featuring döner kababs, shawarma, wraps, salads, rice platters, fresh pastries, coffee drinks, and desserts.
What makes this one interesting for residents is the format, not the menu category. The space is being designed as a casual sit-down café with booth seating, takeout, delivery, outdoor patio seating, and a connected bakery café concept called KC Bakery Café. According to the owners, guests can also expect a full coffee program, baked goods, and a relaxed atmosphere suited for everything from quick meals to remote work. Route 17 is not famous for laptop-friendly patios. A shawarma spot with a bakery attached and a coffee program is a real answer to the "where can I actually sit for an hour" question that most Paramus corners still fail.
One more Route-adjacent update, mostly for the restaurant industry pros who live here: Restaurant Depot has leased 91,135 square feet at 577 Winters Ave. in Paramus. They plan to open in late 2026. Not a place you'll eat, but the kind of anchor that shifts traffic patterns on the north side of town and tells you which corner is next.
The Bandshell is the town's best-kept summer habit

Two reasons this beats the concerts happening in the surrounding towns. First, it's ours. Second, the surrounding towns keep the momentum going if a Tuesday doesn't work for you. Oradell packs six shows into its summer, and the lineup this year is unusually family-oriented for the August dates. The full 2026 slate at Memorial Field runs July 9 — The Counterfeiters, July 16 — The Country Fresh Band, July 23 — Dave Patrick & The Island Band, July 30 — The Chiclettes, August 9 — Tommy's Bubble Time Summer Show at 6:30 PM (family/kids show), and August 19 — Van Martin & The Big Band at 4:30 PM at Schirra Park. The August 9 bubble show is the pick if you have kids under seven. Van Martin on August 19 is the pick if you don't.
Elmwood Park is the other one worth the fifteen-minute drive if the tribute-band format is your thing. Elmwood Park runs one of Bergen County's most impressive tribute-band lineups every summer at the Field Band Shell on Mola Boulevard. All concerts begin at 7:30 PM. Free admission — bring your lawn chairs.
Two festivals that are worth the short drive
August has two events that don't happen inside Paramus but pull directly from Paramus residents. Both are within twenty minutes.
Japanese Food Festival, Saturday August 1, Overpeck County Park. The Japanese Food Festival 2026 runs on Saturday, August 1, from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm at the Overpeck County Park Amphitheater in Ridgefield Park. Admission is free. This is not a small folding-table affair. The festival features an authentic lineup of Japanese food vendors, along with traditional Matsuri games for children, including Yo-Yo balloon fishing and Super Ball scooping. The festival also includes a full day of entertainment. Daytime performances include Taiko drumming, Yosakoi dance, J-Pop music, Zumba, DJ sets, and national anthem performances. Beginning at 5:00 pm, the evening program features Okinawan music, samurai sword fighting, Bon Odori, Awaodori, and a Yukata Contest at 6:00 pm, where participants are invited to wear traditional summer kimonos and take the stage. The evening block is the sleeper. Most families drift home after Taiko. If you stay for Bon Odori, you get the version of the festival most Bergen residents never see.
Saborland, August 28 to August 30, American Dream. The Saborland Food Festival comes to American Dream from August 28 through August 30, 2026. This three-day festival features more than 100 food vendors serving a wide variety of Latin flavors, along with live music, DJ entertainment, rides, games, shopping from merchandise vendors, and plenty of photo opportunities. Bilingual households in Paramus already know this one. If you don't, it lands at American Dream, Lot 26, in East Rutherford, New Jersey, which is the same fifteen-minute drive as the mall.
A weeknight loop that actually works
Here's how a Paramus resident who reads this stitches August together. Tuesday evening, walk into the Bandshell an hour before sunset. Wednesday morning, Tatte for cortado and a pistachio croissant before the line arrives. Saturday, keep the day light because Overpeck's Japanese Food Festival runs from 11 to 8. Later in the month, block off the last weekend for Saborland at American Dream. When Kabab Cafe opens on Route 17, add it to the weekday lunch rotation and stop treating Route 17 as a place you only drive through.
The through line: Paramus is not the retail-only town its reputation suggests. Bergen Town Center is quietly becoming a food address, Route 17 is getting a place where you can actually sit down with a laptop, and the Bandshell has been running free Tuesday concerts the whole time.
